A 27-second horror-comedy short, 4:3, ten shots with hard cuts. It must look like a lavish gothic horror film shot by a top cinematographer: a real actor, a real built ballroom set, a dozen real creature performers in full prosthetic makeup, hundreds of real candles, practical lighting only. Starts as dread, ends as perfectly timed dark comedy. Not animation, not CGI, not AI-looking. CAMERA AND LENS PACKAGE Shot on an ARRI Alexa 35 with Cooke S4 prime lenses, 24 fps, 180-degree shutter. Large-format look: creamy shallow depth of field, candle bokeh like floating embers. One long Steadicam move, one overhead crane God's-eye shot, the rest on dolly or locked tripod. Every move smooth and motivated. REFERENCES @image1 = THE MAN, the only human: a young man in his mid-twenties with short dark curly hair, a thin moustache, olive skin, wearing a brown-and-black vertically striped short-sleeve camp-collar shirt over a white undershirt, a thin gold chain necklace, a gold wristwatch, pleated dark wide-leg trousers with a black belt, and black loafers. LOCK his identity completely from @image1: exact face, skin, hair, body, outfit, identical in every shot. He wears NO costume — that is the entire joke. THE MONSTERS (no reference, original designs, all practical prosthetics): about twelve creature performers filling the ballroom. Among them: a seven-foot gaunt vampire countess with chalk-white cracked skin and a high black lace collar; a hulking werewolf with real matted yak-hair fur and wet black gums; a drowned bride in a rotten waterlogged gown, hair dripping; a headless butler carrying his own murmuring head on a silver tray; twin ghoul children holding hands; a moth-man with dusty trembling wings. Every monster is genuinely frightening, museum-quality makeup, no masks that read as masks. None resemble characters from existing films. THE SET: a decaying gothic ballroom at midnight: a cracked marble floor, tall arched windows with torn velvet curtains and cold blue moonlight, a giant cobwebbed chandelier holding dozens of lit candles, long banquet tables with black candelabras, carved jack-o'-lanterns glowing on every surface, a small stage with a golden trophy shaped like a screaming skull, a huge wooden double door. Dust, cobwebs, wax drippings — all real. LIGHTING — THE VISUAL ENGINE Practical only: four hundred real candle flames and the orange glow of jack-o'-lanterns as key light, flickering naturally on every face; cold blue moonlight through the windows as rim and fill; a low layer of real floor fog catching the light. When the room panics in the finale, a gust kills half the candles and the blue moonlight takes over. Clear catchlights in every eye, human and monster. [0.0–1.5s] SHOT 1 — THE HOOK Camera: 32mm, locked off, from inside the ballroom facing the huge double door. The door creaks open, the man steps in mid-sentence, checking his phone: "…guys, is this the costume par—". The door SLAMS itself behind him. In the same instant, every monster in the room turns its head toward him in perfect unison. Dead silence. Candle flames bend toward him. [1.5–5.0s] SHOT 2 — THE STEADICAM WALK Camera: 35mm Steadicam, one unbroken move gliding backwards in front of him as he walks slowly into the crowd, forcing an awkward smile and little waves. On both sides, monsters lean into frame inspecting him: the drowned bride drips beside his shoulder, the werewolf sniffs his hair, the butler's severed head swivels on its tray to follow him. His smile dies step by step. Floor fog curls around his loafers. [5.0–7.5s] SHOT 3 — GOD'S-EYE Camera: 24mm on a crane, directly overhead through the chandelier's candles. The monsters close into a perfect slow circle around the tiny striped figure in the centre, like a ritual. His face tilts up at the lens, confused, lit orange from the pumpkins below. [7.5–10.5s] SHOT 4 — THE JUDGING Camera: 50mm, slow dolly lateral. The vampire countess circles him, inspecting his face from centimetres away, one long black nail tracing the air along his jawline without touching. Extreme shallow focus: her cracked white face sharp, his terrified eyes sharp, everything else candle bokeh. She whispers, impressed, in a dry rasp: "Exquisite… so lifelike." [10.5–13.0s] SHOT 5 — CLOSE-UP, HIS FACE Camera: 75mm, slow 5 cm push-in. He finally understands where he is. Sweat beads on his forehead in the candlelight, his jaw trembles, his eyes dart to the door — a monster now leans against it. He swallows loudly. The werewolf's low growl rumbles somewhere off frame. [13.0–16.0s] SHOT 6 — THE ANNOUNCEMENT Camera: 40mm, low angle on the stage. The headless butler's tray-head announces with theatrical joy: "The scariest costume of the night…" A drumroll of claws on tables. A bony spotlight of gathered candelabras swings toward the man: "…THE HUMAN!" The ballroom erupts: shrieks, howls, applause of claws and bandaged hands. [16.0–19.0s] SHOT 7 — THE CROWNING Camera: 50mm dolly push-in. Monsters hoist him gently onto the stage. The vampire countess presses the golden screaming-skull trophy into his shaking hands. The twin ghoul children tug his trousers in admiration. He looks at the trophy, then at the crowd, in pure stunned silence — then can't help a tiny proud smile. [19.0–21.5s] SHOT 8 — THE MISTAKE Camera: 65mm, over the countess's shoulder. She leans in, delighted, and rasps: "Now… remove the mask. Show us the face beneath." The ballroom goes silent. All monsters lean in. His smile dies. He tugs his own cheek with two fingers, stretches it, lets it snap back, and says quietly: "…It doesn't come off." [21.5–24.0s] SHOT 9 — THE BOOM Camera: 24mm wide, locked off from the stage, deep focus. One full second of frozen silence — then total pandemonium: twelve monsters screaming in raw terror, trampling each other toward the exits, the werewolf crashing through a window, the drowned bride diving under a table, the butler dropping his own head. A gust kills half the candles; cold blue moonlight floods the room. The man stands alone on stage, trophy in hand, baffled. [24.0–27.0s] SHOT 10 — THE BUTTON Camera: 50mm, slow push-in on the stage in the blue half-light. The ruined, empty ballroom, overturned chairs, one rolling pumpkin. He looks at the trophy, shrugs, and steps down — then a tiny ghoul child pops up from behind the stage, holds up a small bone like a selfie stick, and poses next to him. Camera flash. Hard black. PERFORMANCE Played completely straight. His fear is real and escalating: stiff shoulders, swallowed breath, the forced social smile of a man trying not to die politely. The monsters are genuinely terrifying until the exact moment they become the frightened ones — their terror of a real human is what makes it funny. No winking at the audience. TEXTURE AND REALISM Real skin on the man: pores, stubble, sweat shining in candlelight. Monsters: real prosthetic texture — cracked paint, wet gums, dripping hair, dusty wings, real fabric rot. Real wax, real fog, real dust in the light beams. Real flame flicker on every surface, fine 35mm film grain. COLOUR GRADE Warm amber candle-and-pumpkin glow against deep blue moonlight shadows, rich detailed blacks, natural skin tones, soft highlight roll-off. The finale shifts cold blue when the candles die. SOUND Shot 1: his casual voice, the door slam, then absolute silence. Shot 2: only his footsteps on marble, wet drips, a sniff, fabric rustle. Shot 3: a low choral drone. Shots 4–5: her dry whisper, his trembling breath, a distant growl. Shot 6: the theatrical announcement, drumroll of claws, monstrous applause. Shots 7–8: warm murmurs, then dead silence on "It doesn't come off." Shot 9: an explosion of screams, breaking glass, wind. Shot 10: silence, one rolling pumpkin, a cheerful little camera click. Hard cut to black. BANS Only one human: the man of @image1. No change to his face or outfit. No CGI, cartoon, or plastic look on any monster. No airbrushed skin. No gore, no blood, no violence against anyone. No readable text, no logos, no watermarks.
